The Sunday Times had a specially sponsored section on mobile
business this weekend. The section gave
some interesting stats that are worth repeating (just in case you didn’t think
mobile payments is big business):
- 28.2 trillion messages will be sent from mobiles in 2016, up from 15 trillion this year (Source: Juniper Research)
- 9.4 trillion text messages will be sent in 2016, up from 5.9 trillion today (Source: Informa) –read the interview with the inventor of SMS on the BBC today)
- 7.7 trillion mobile instant messages will be sent in 2016, up from 1.6 trillion today (Source: Informa)
- People spend two hours per day consuming media on mobile devices, 81% of which is spent in apps)
- App downloads will rise from 45 billion in 2012 to 309 billion in 2016, generating almost $75 billion in revenues (Source: Gartner)
- Mobile connections in Europe will rise to 2.1 billion connections
by 202, up from 1.3 billion today (Source: GSMA)
- Mobile connections in the UK will rise to 200 million in
2020 (Source: GSMA)
- There are 326 million mobile broadband connections in Europe
today (Source: GSMA)
- 61% of UK population use a smartphone against an average 44%
in Western Europe (Source: IAB)
- Apple has a 31% market share of smartphones in the UK and 95% of the mobile tablet market (Source: Ofcom)
- 40% of all retail searches on mobile devices take place on tablet
computers, even though tablets only represent 10% of the mobile devices market

- 53 million table devices will be bought by businesses in
2016, up from 13 million this year (Source: Gartner) – note Barclays Bank is
implementing the largest iPad rollout of a bank with 8,500 units ordered
- 40% of adverts on mobiles are ‘fraudulent’ or accidental

- Revenue from social media will be $16.9 billion in 2012, up
43% on 2011 (Source: Gartner)
- 17 billion mobile payment transactions will be made in 2013,
up from 141 million in 2011)
- By 2020, half of all payments by Visa will be on mobiles

- The USA spent $2.6 billion on mobile marketing this year
- Britain will spend $1.5 billion on mobiles this Christmas

- eBay will process $10
billion of mobile payments this year, in terms of global mobile auction sales,
which is double that of 2011 (Source: eBay))
- Connected living will create €392 billion in revenues in
2020 compared with €155 billion today (Source: GSMA))
- Connected car services will be worth €48 billion in 2020; smart
cities €46 billion; and mobile health solutions €23 billion (Source: GSMA)
